I was fortunate enough to have people like my mom who talked to be about periods and give me the information I needed. It didn't make the experience any less terrifying when it came about, but at least I was educated.
At first I was really shy about talking about my period especially around boys, but as I got older, I became less tolerant of treating it as a taboo. Since boys got to talk about their bodily functions all the time, they can handle a period.
It's not a secret ritual, it's an uncontrollable biological function of the female body. You wouldn't be here if they didn't exist. No one should ever feel ashamed for something they can't control.
